I guess it would be because he wouldn't be make the top five best drivers on the grid for many observers. He's had to push harder than he's ever been prepared to this season, made family sacrifices, put himself mentally in a place that goes against his natural, much more likeable and gentlemanly instinct. All this and yet when even he looks back on this year, he'll recognise that there was an air of good fortune about his championship win. And that he would have to do that all over again and likely find a bit more not to be crushed by a team mate who is much more clinical in achieving his goals.
Or he can walk away as F1 world champion. I wouldn't criticise him for that but I doubt it was as simple as 'goal achieved, off to be a dad'.
