I have kept off this board for some time...but your recent strident calls for the banning of the TT have made me comment.
Yes....the TT is dangerous...very dangerous.
Far too dangerous in YOUR view, and so it should be banned.
However, ALL motorsport is dangerous. In SOME peoples eyes, TOO dangerous, and so it should be banned. WHy is YOUR view any more valid than THEIRS? You DON'T have a monopoly on common sense, or moral outrage. If anyone judges an activity too dangerous for OTHER people to take part in, it should be banned. Those are your views...simple. As you yourself have said, take any argument to its extremes to see how it stands up. Right now, it could be said that the TT is the most dangerous form of motorsport. If you ban it, then some OTHER motorsport becomes the most dangerous. SO..the calls for THAT to be banned too will start....and YOU would HAVE TO support them. Just how many deaths ARE acceptable? You asked the question, so howsabout giving your answer? If you say any number other than ZERO, you are being JUST as inconsistant as all those others you accuse. But, if you DO say zero, then you MUST support the banning of ALL motorsport.
You try to use Gladiatorial combat as a parallel issue. Rubbish, and you know it. Its not about the number of deaths. Its all about intent. I LOVE the TT, despite the fact that there MAY be a fatality. I DON'T like watching boxing...because there is the INTENT to harm. Deaths or injuries are ACCIDENTAL in motorsport...they are deliberate in boxing, cage fighting, or similar. However, I would not support the banning of something that many people enjoy doing. I might support banning televising it... not because of the injuries, but because of the aggression.
The TT is a very special event. Those who take part love it. Those who spectate get the chance to go around the circuit themselves...(Mad Sunday.....oooh the memories!). Asking for it to be banned is just the start...Monaco could be next...then what?
