Mario was the number 1 driver and Ronnie only had the Lotus 78 for the start of the season when Mario (a personal favourite of mine) already had the all-conquering 79. You should know that Ronnie was still in a 78 in his final crash having been required to use the, effectively, spare car for Monza. Yes, he HAD been given a 79 on occasions.... but far too few times for Ronnie's liking, I can tell you!
Mario was a FABULOUS driver but Ronnie was WAY quicker..... and the Team would tell you that if you spoke to them about it as they ALL (inc. Colin) said as much at dinner I attended during 1978! Mario was VASTLY better at setting cars up and Ronnie would drive him MAD by turning up 'late' and asking for the car to be set 'like Mario's' and then turning in the same lap time.... or quicker... in two or three laps.
Saying 'Ronnie was better' does not mean I am denigrating Mario. Mario's performances were legendary but Ronnie's were out of this WORLD.... once Mario had set the car up FOR him!
Given joint-number-one status (and still having access to Mario's data), Ronnie would have beaten Mario in 1978. Mario just didn't have the raw speed of Ronnie! Of course, no one can EVER 'prove' it and it'll always remain an 'opinion'. But, those of us who saw him taking Woodcote FLAT in the Lotus 72 saw REAL car-control!
For me, that team (Lotus, Colin, Mario and Ronnie) were the complete 'dream-team', never to be bettered... expect perhaps by Lotus, Colin, Graham and Jimmy...... of course!
