I spent an evening with John Edwards - he's in that video of the 1980 World Championship - during the summer and he recounted some of his days in Hot Rods and latterly Thundersaloons. Anyone remember the Edwards/Shaw giant killing MkII Escort of the late 1980s ? Some amazing stories for sure. That whole Hot Rod scene was incredibly competitive and they did get paid start money.
A footnote to the story is that John's roots were in karting in the late 1960s, early 1970s and he used to race at Shennington with fellow midlanders Chris Hodgetts and Nigel Mansell. I sold John my Zip Californian and he's now planning on restoring it with a Komet K77.
IIRC Ivor Greenwood - interviewed in the video - also had a spell in Superkarts. I vaguely remembver racing in Mondello in the 1980s with a really professional set-up.
All roads lead back to karting :-)
