Thank you Alan I'm blushing :-)
DIY by not racing you miss the major point of karts. Equal equipment, massed grids, it's awesome. Mike and Alfie are a bit like blow up friends. Good fun in themselves but not like the real thing.
I grew up taking part in speed hill climbs in cars. Racing against the clock is in my blood, but even there it's pretty bland unless there's some reason to find those extra tenths or even hundredths. When your best mate is running one car ahead of you, you know you can beat him if only you can get the exit to the final corner right...Then it matters, then it's important, then it hurts if you don't do it...you don't get that just testing.
Competition is awesome. Without it life is dull and bland.
Alex I urge you to take the plunge you will absolutely love it. You'll make good friends who like us don't care about your past and just see you as another good bloke. I've seen young drivers come to the kart centre as timid little things and leave as real racing drivers with self belief and pride in their step. ADHD, learning disorders, we've had them all and racing gives them the opportunity to be on a par with others for the first time in their lives.
Do it Alex, it'll be brilliant. And make sure you tell us even if you're five laps behind! You will learn so much just from being on track with everyone else and you'll discover a real purpose to life.
