Not really on topic but another story from the auction world.
A friend of mines grandad was a bit of a "character" as was termed in the 40s,modern day parlance,"the village alky !". He was off work for some reason and as was his way hit the Pub,mid afternoon he decided to go for a walk and clear his head a bit before the pubs opened for the evening session. as he was walking down one of the local lanes he saw a sign "Auction today" ,or similar, and he went and found himself the only person there other than the Auctioneer and his clerk. "make me a bid if you wish Mr Stoneman the reserve is £15" said the Auctioneer, he said "£15 and five shillings" "once ... twice..3 times sold!" His grandad owned an orchard ,which the Council wanted for building on and someone FORGOT it was Auction day. As he was virtually penniless a deal was struck the Council bought it off him and gave him a piece of the land as a part of the deal, the remaining cash paid for a wooden prefab, which still stands today.Along with a few of the original apple trees !
Just goes to show you can get really lucky at auction at times. As I said off topic but i love that story, poor bloke gets one over on the council......
