Most non commercial clubs have ARKS examiners that will carry out the test for you without charging you anything other than the test fee. Typically its carried out during a normal practice day before a race. You practice as normal the examiner will watch and time you, generally later in the day once you are up to speed. As long as your are safe can complete the laps in a reasonable time. Do the simple flag and multi choice test and your done. Race next day, no problem.
With your starter pack there should be a list of clubs with examiners, if not goto: -
