There's nothing wrong with training if the child wants to do it, but if you make it a necessity in order to be competitive then it becomes a further erosion of the fun side of racing. The competitor, be they child or adult, shouldn't need to commit any more than necessary in order to enjoy the sport.
Sorry but I have a bee in my bonnet about people taking this sport too seriously and losing focus on the fact that it's supposed to be an enjoyable passtime. Spending their way to the front, closed awnings, stamina training. Maybe that's all ok and expected at super 1 but I don't think it should be encouraged at club level. We need to make it as easy to access as possible and suggesting that kids should train between their races will put a lot of them off. Short races make it accesible to even the lardiest salad dodgers.
